Recycling dental-product waste could mean kids at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital get a new playground.
Anderson Dental Care is participating in the National Colgate & TerraCycle Oral Care Recycling Program. In partnership with Starlight Children’s Foundation, the state that recycles the most oral waste will receive a playground for a children’s hospital.
Most local recycling centers can’t recycle your toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes or floss cases. They ARE recyclable, but if you recycle them with the rest of your plastics they will likely be sorted out and sent to a landfill (gasp!).
What keeps these certain recycled items from getting reused? Oral care products and packaging are made up of a complex mix of materials, which makes them difficult to recycle. Complications can also arise from incorrect sorting, contamination and other issues.
It’s a complicated problem that has inspired many to seek new solutions – including our team at Anderson Dental Care!
Don’t panic, we have a solution!
Until the end of the day on June 22nd, we kindly ask that you take a few minutes out of your busy day to bring in your old toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes & caps, empty floss cases, and any oral packaging (feel free to bring us your neighbors’ stuff too).
Chances are you need a new toothbrush anyway. Did you know that a new toothbrush is 90% more effective than a three-month-old one?! This means that you can bring us your old toothbrush as well and the packaging from your shiny new toothbrush!
TerraCycle is an innovative recycling business that upcycles and resells collected materials to be used in new products. Founder Tom Szaky works directly with brands to design solutions to reuse all materials Terracycle receives. Anderson Dental Care is excited to be working with TerraCycle to make sure our dental waste is efficiently refurbished, upcycled and recycled!
Ultimately, TerraCycle will shred and melt down your old germy toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes and mold the material to create a beautiful playground for a children’s hospital. If we win, the playground will be installed at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital!
Giving children who are battling serious illnesses a chance to just be kids on the playground again is priceless. And you can help by simply recycling your old oral plastics with us. Look, even if we don’t win for Cincinnati, you’re a rockstar for taking the time to show that you care about the planet and kids.
And, of course, we win here at Anderson Dental Care because we’ll get to see you when you drop off your plastics AND we get to help make a difference in our community. Regardless of who wins the contest, everyone wins knowing children somewhere will be sliding down a slide made from our old toothbrushes, floss containers and other oral care waste! That puts a smile on our faces!
Dr. Brooks is thrilled to be offering these recycling services to our entire community in Cincinnati.
“This Oral Care Recycling Program is a great way to model our values and include our families and communities in the process; choosing Cincinnati Children’s Hospital as the playground recipient if we win makes it even more meaningful as several of my children have been well-cared for there.”
